storytelling in boudoir

A Sexy Story

Boudoir photography gives us the wonderful opportunity to tell a story through photographs.

After years of photographing different genres, I finally found a way for my soul to be a part of the art I create.

My favourite images from other artists and the type of images I prefer to create have a narrative, a story element to them that makes them unique.

The story can be told with a collection of images or just one and it can be about anything. Colour, texture, shapes a mood, light. It can be abstract or clearly defined.

In my work, I want to create images that leave the viewer feeling like they are a part of the image. I want the viewer to get caught up in the image because it evokes an emotion in them. I try to incorporate an element of story into every boudoir session and sometimes I try to tell a story in just one image.

What gives the story context is the scene. Where you are, and the elements around you. I like to keep my sets minimal but because we are in my home studio we benefit from and take advantage of the home environment. This is intentional for me because I like a voyeuristic feel to my images.

If you want to tell a good story  it’s in the details. I love to photograph detail shots. Close ups of the fingers pressing into the skin or gently touching the lips, or caressing a collar bone a just a few examples of detail shots that enrich a boudoir story.

The actions you take and movements you make are what make the story more captivating. The position of the body (posing), the activity in the scene is what draws the viewer in. I prefer in my sessions to have many images where my client isn’t looking into the camera. I want her in her own world, relaxed and focused on herself. For the voyeurism aspect of the image she needs look like she’s unaware of the camera, even though she clearly is aware. When making eye contact with the camera, it is deliberate. She can be flirting with the viewer or even confronting the viewers gaze.

I love images that are subtly sexy, and subtly provocative. Typical boudoir sessions have a “look at me” feeling to the images but I prefer to create images that are subtly sexy and subtly provocative. I find them to be more classic and more timeless.

Each of these images could stand alone and be beautiful boudoir photos.  Together in a gallery they tell a story.
